Not just Sloth

Sometimes I just have to withdraw for a while.

My last posting was while I was in Glasgow. I stayed there until the 18th of November and had a really lovely time. I felt safe. What are the ramifications of that? Dunno.

After I posted, I saw the fireworks on Nov 5th, was there when the city received the approval for the Commonwealth Games in 2014, went to a textile design class, read, wandered, went to the People's Palace (museum) and lots of other stuff. Watched tv, slept, or didn't sleep, but it all was okay.

I left a bag of clothes there for when I return in March for the Chris Rea gig. The planning for this is taking lots more time than I thought it would because I've been trying to figure out a more economical way to get there. Used MANY minutes on my phonecard calling Continental in TX to see if I could use my miles to upgrade. A few days ago MaxJet declared Chapter 11 and ceased flying, so that is one option cancelled.

Back here after dithering and being unhappy, I went to FRB and told him I was tendering my resignation. I had told others I was going to do it before I did - steeling myself?? It was sucky.
A few days after that I spoke with WRM and got some perspective, then went back to FRB and told him that I still didn't feel right for the job, but would stick it out and also apologize to the Vestry for my outburst and ask for their help. That I am still supporting him in his efforts to help the church.

Heaven knows what will happen to STM.

Thanksgiving was one of the best in a long time. Chet certainly adds to the event.

Christmas was also good. I had lunch at the M. Moran's, packed up the shopping cart and went to the M &L DeLange's, left there and headed to the C. Moran's for another dinner. Grazing and not drinking a lot helped. All in all, a good day. Happy birthday Jesus and Good Job to Mary, Joseph, the Holy Ghost and all. Really! I hope someday Chet will understand what Christmas is really about other than being surrounded by people who love him.

Today lunch with Willa and Chet Time. Both fine.

The 30th Bev Hall and Sascha will be in town. I look forward to seeing them.

New Years Eve - no plans. Video marathon?

MsBelle has sent a blog idea - 101 things to do in 1001 days. I like it and may try to do some.

I think no one reads this, so if anyone does, would they tell me?

It is 11:20 PM and I should think about bed. Okay, I am thinking about it. Hmmm.

Words & more

Weegie - A Glaswegian

Hoot mon - Scotsman

Numpty - n. Fool, jerk, useless person

Dreich - adj. Damp, dreary, wet (not too much so far, thank goodness)

Arrived on the 16th and feel like I never left. Doing this and that, but not THIS & THAT.
Catching up on sleep, have read 4 books (3 brought from home + one bought at Charity Shop when I took the others in.

Yesterday I went to a jewelry making class at the Gallery of Modern Art. Free, fun, everybody feeding off others creativity. Me and my inner child got together and made some flowers. Perhaps picture inserted at later date. That would be when I read the instructions on how to do same.

Found the library: This is sort of complicated. When I first started to come here, there was the Stirling Library in a really nice building on Queen Street. Then it became the Gallery of Modern Art and the library moved to Miller Street. Then the library disappeared from Miller St and I found I had to go all the way to the West End, by the University, to find a library. Then yesterday, in a break from the Jewelry Making, i went down to the Cafe for a cup of coffee (in the basement/lower level) and there was the Library. Back! Cool!!

Trying to make a backpack with minimal sewing. Bought a remnant of fleece and some cording. I measured out the fabric using a notebook, added a generous side allowance, amount at top to make a turn over and then sliced up the sides in about 1" fringe pieces and knotted them together. Now I have a bag, tomorrow I will deal with sewing the turn over and putting the cording in. Then I have to secure the cording at the bottom. Normally these packs have grommets so more creativity needed. A lot of fun for GBP 4.75 for fabric, cord, needles and 2 kinds of thread. And a big piece left over to figure out something.

Brought US dvds to play here. They work perfectly. Am watching the Millenium series, but if it gets too icky I will switch to the movie Sideways.

Made vegetable soup tonight and have to air out the place despite the exhaust fan over the stove. Leeks, peas, potatoes, assorted vegetables from a bag of 'soup vegetables'. Chicken broth and some cut up chicken. Mmm. healthy.

That's all for now. Need to sleep so I can get up at a decent time tomorrow.

Fall trip - Glasgow Days 1 & 2

A lot of the enjoyment for me is in the whole process of research, planning, booking and finally in the shoot. (shute?)

I knew I wanted to go back to Scotland but was not sure when I could. Danielle's wedding on October 13th gave me the date to leave after. Leaving the next day, a Sunday? Yuck. As it was I slept until 10:30 that morning! So, because I wanted the cheaper morning flight, I picked the 9AM flight on Monday. Intensive Internet research, booking on line, phone calls, and I had it set up.

I still had my packing list from the previous trip, so wasn't worried about what to bring. Staying in a flat with washer-dryer makes things so easy. Also, I decided that khaki trousers and a cashmere sweater would suffice for any dressy occasion.

The wedding was great fun! I wore my silk dress (sleeveless white with black flowers, long) and my feathered hat. I looked marvelous - and I brought the rhinestone shoes. So Fab!

Next day the DeLs came over and we all were pretty tired, except Chet, who was his charming self. Cute as a button! After they left, I took a nap - evidentally not too stressed about packing. In order to motivate myself, I threw everything on the bed, so I had to finish before getting any sleep. Bing bang, done with room to spare.

I packed 4 books to read in the leftover area of my carry-on bag. I hate to haul heavy stuff and over the years have spent many GBP sending accumulated things home so I wouldn't have to lug them. Now I travel with 1 carry-on bag with wheels and a knapsack - the laptop is in a neoprene pouch in the bag.

Bed late, but after all, I was going on a plane trip - not much to do there but sit/lie down/sleep all day.

6:45AM the taxi arrived. No traffic and I was there by 7:20. Whisked to the lounge and ate a nice breakfast, made some phone calls to people's voicemails to say goodbye, then on the plane.

I started sneezing when I got on and used about 10 tissues before the flight was over. Turned down the offer of 'entertainment module', slept, woke for a truly awful Kosher breakfast (my fault, should have stuck to the regular menu) and slept. And drank lots of water, used the lav. and slept. Arrived in Stansted about 9:15pm and was in the hotel by 9:40. Ordered room service - smoked salmon salad and a beer, then a bath and sleep. My alarm went off before the wake up call, so I was awake. Shower, fresh clothes, tissues stored in pocket and down to breakfast. I only remember the coffee, oh, and yogurt and a banana and a roll and butter. Then back to room, storing more tissues strategically in knapsack, check out and a 2 minute walk to the airport. I'd done the boarding pass at home, so had time to wander after going through SECURITY. Last year it was a nightmare as every electronic device I had set off the sniffer and I had to wait 25 minutes for the supervisor to 'pass' on my stuff, and I was patted down, too. (and not by some cute guy, either).

Looking for something to dry my nose! The mini-drugstore advised some multi-flu cold product which did zilch. Glad I had the tissues. EasyJet was about 40 minutes late, but it didn't bother me. Flight was fine, landed in a blue and sunny Glasgow and hopped on the local bus which let me off about a block from the flat.

I was looking forward to Flat 12, but am in Flat 5. No big deal except that in the middle flat the bedroom is on the front and there is no cross ventilation. I may move when Christine (the Apartment Manager returns from her holiday). The flat wasn't ready so I went grocery shopping, stocking up on the necessities of life - coffee, yogurt, cheese, crackers, breakfast rolls and real butter.

I have been here since Tuesday afternoon, but feel like I never left in May. Odd, or not.

No more for now. Stay tuned!

Oh yes, my nose stopped running when I got here. Hmmmm. Very strange.

Relatives. Relatively speaking.

Relatives. Relatively speaking.

I am an orphan. No mom & pop, sibs. Yes, I do have cousins by the dozens, BUT: if you never see them. Have only seen most of them less than 30 times in my life, does that count as family?

Set 1: Used to live in Huntington, LI, NY. Saw them every couple of years until they moved to the West. Then, never. 3 girls, 1 boy. Wouldn't know them if I fell over them.

Set 2: 4 girls, two I have seen as adults and would recognize and am fond of. The others, totally unknown.

Set 3: Their father, my mom's half-brother, I saw during WW2 when he could get home, then post-War, after he was married and before my grandparents died, maybe 2-3 times. After they (2 girls, 2 boys) moved to NH, and my folks moved to NH, I saw them a couple of times a year. Jeannie (the eldest) lived with us one summer while she took advanced courses in PT in NYC). After my parents died, nada. In fact, the only thing I can remember about my uncle during that time was that he asked if I would return the sap yolk that Mom had. It belonged to his dad. And the mahoghany tray, inlaid with mother of pearl with a picture of the Taj Mahal that he had brought back from India from the War. After that, I don't think he was in touch. I got a Christmas card from my cousin Sue (in Feb or March) telling me that he had died in August 2006. Uh huh.
Her other sibs? Heaven knows.

Set 4: Various - Tommy? If alive, in FL. Hooper? Still in Marblehead MA, I think. Skip (Warren) in Chevy Chase, but I haven't heard from him in a few years. He and his wife had 2 sons, but one committed suicide in 1997 - a golden boy who was most likely bi-polar.

So that's it. Family but no family.

I called Roger today to wish him happy Fathers Day. Had a very nice talk with him and Carolyn. We are Matt's family, along with Nancy, his sister, Matt's aunt. Matt may remember the Clarks but he has only seen Jenny Hartley once or twice and I don't think he has met the others at all.

On a completely different note: I am now the Senior Warden of St. Mark's Church. Elected last Wednesday when I was feeling really sick with diverticulitis - but Dr. Kaplan thinks it wasn't, but on Cipro none the less.
This is a learning process. I was thinking of designing a shirt with the graphic of a pair of cut off blue jeans with wings - Flying by the Seat of Your Pants. But wearing my adult persona I think that asking questions and taking guidance, I may be able to help St. Marks.

Last Sunday I took lots of pictures of the arborist in the tree (about 5 stories up) and the parishioners reaction to that and also snaps of the church people. Today I posted them on the church bulletin board. I will be interested to hear the reaction.

After church I had breakfast and COFFEE, lounged, then went to the craft store to buy artificial flowers for the fire place. Otherwise it just stares at me - a black hole.

Yesterday I went into Manhattan to buy more nylon storage cubes for my laundry. Instead of a hamper, I have a cube in the closet, but realize I could pre-sort my laundry if I had one for dark and mixed as well as white. Now I do. Wash time will be easier, as long as I have quarters.

Tomorrow a 6:30 meeting. Tuesday 8:00 AM:11:30AM. Wednesday, Doctor at 2:15, church at 5:00 and hopefully music at Novo at 7.

Things to do: Laundry, Space Bagged storage to basement, Bose set up, Mauricio call, notes to Judy and Susie, Rummage/Flea Market sorting down in basement.

Hmm, almost midnight - pumpkin or bed. Tough decision.

Family Outing

Today was Dani's wedding shower up in Tarrytown NY. I wore a really nice dress that I had purchased last summer - can't remember where. The DeL's drove me up along with Dinora. I knew almost everyone but didn't mingle much. Food great and too rich, but I could have chosen something else, so my fault.

Came home, found none of my emails from yesterday answered.

Could have cleaned up, done laundry, put things away. Didn't.

Lots of churchish things tomorrow.

Friday and backwards

The allergies turned me into Bomzie! Wednesday is a blur, I think. I do remember being very grouchy - in fact Father B. asked if I had forgotten to take my anti-grouch pills. This changed to I did take a grouchy pill. After the service I decided not to go to Novo but to play in the garden. David M. was there so we sat on a bench and talked for a long time. Probably much better than going to Novo. Then home, reading, sleep. Oh yes, now I remember - I sat in bed and read 5 days worth of NYT. Oh, and went to Bed Bath Beyond and returned something before church.

Yesterday I wanted to get up early, do laundry, go to drugstore, etc. etc. but sat in bed and finished the book I was reading night before. Then I got up, washed in cold water (brrr!), dressed and went in to have lunch with Velma. I checked my email before leaving and found Dorothy wanted to garden in the pm. I went to 'Shop the Block' - the museums on 53rd have 20% sales one day a year if you are a member of one. I go each time and hardly ever buy anything. This time I found some nice layered glass picture frames, so bought 3 small and 3 medium before meeting Velma. Great lunch and visit (as usual). Then headed home, quick like a bunny, to meet up with Dorothy. I waited and waited. (probably not THAT long) then she called. I had actually dashed past her while she was having a haircut and she ran out to call my name, but I was chugging along too fast.

We went over about 4 and left about 7+. I dug and weeded and heaved and hoed (not hoed, but raking, it's an expression). And watered. Dorothy planted about 100 basil plants and 50 marigolds. We stopped to chat with Angela, Maria, Melissa, Lenny, Lisa, Nikki, Rebecca & Endeshaw - and Jean, the nice lady who sits in the garden. Next time no gardening on the FarmSpot night.

Hobbled home, showered at length (hot water back), found nothing on TV to watch. Cursed the piles of clothes, went to bed and read and slept.

Here we are at Friday. Up early enough to close the windows because the trees and bushes were being sprayed for insects. Puttered around, made coffee, cursed the piles of clothes, checked email, showered, dressed, took more dry-cleaning to a different dry cleaner, went to Home Depot, bought good hose nozzles, new fencing (we ran out on Thursday), checked out the garden path materials and headed back to St. Marks. Despite no water, I decided it was a good thing to put in the 90' of fence and test the nozzles. Hot? Oh yeah! Dehydrated? You bet. Job accomplished I headed home, stripped and showered at length, after drinking a few glasses of water. Splitting headache from the sun, etc. No Gatorade so I thought OH, I CAN have a V-8! And did. And electrolytes back in place, I felt better. Good enough to realize I hadn't had lunch and needed to go to the drugstore.

Down the street, met one neighbor. Went to drugstore $98 for meds. Off to Jahn's the neighborhood traditional eatery, had yummy food and coffee. On the way home met 2 more neighbors. Got home and actually put some clothes away. Some.

Thank goodness Martha couldn't come today. I am so embarassed at the state of the house! I feel like the before in a Makeover show. And you will note I am writing this and not working on the clothes........

Sent a ton of emails, spoke to a number of people, cancelled out an order for a new cell phone - too confusing. Watched Washington Week in Review and here I am.

Tomorrow is Dani's shower. Sunday is Church - Coffee hour (me in charge) - Money Counting (didn't the Lord have something to say about that....?) and then the DeL's. They'll probably have to scrape me up off the floor.

Later.

allergies

Itchy eyes, skin, even my hair itches! Yikes.

Monday

Rain. It has such a wonderful effect on me. I think I used to hate it as a child but now I really appreciate it and the sound.

Not much in the clothes swapping done today but got rid of all the niggling tasks I had to do and cooked chicken w/artichokes, olives and bay leaves (thank you L!). Got a 20 minute nap in and went to Jazz.

Val and Jacob were there. Jacob, 2+ still refers/responds to me with No or Nyet. I may bring him around by the time he's in his 20s, maybe. FRB and Frau Doktor came in for the music so I sat with them. They are fun to be with so worth giving up my front row seat for the music.

I still got home to see Murphy's Law which is good. I like James Nesbitt.

Herding cats was not successful and the VERY IMPORTANT meeting with FRB, WRM and Lenny is stalled for now. One can't make AM, Two can't make lunch and Sunday morning is a tenuous fallback. Herding cats IS the term. Men, such posturing!! Oy.

Bernie tomorrow.

Am I the last to discover? Probably TMI!

Am I the last to discover that hair conditioner is wonderful to use to shave your legs? Mmm!
Bath & Body Works Ginger Mandarin (or something close to that name) smelled great, moisturized the leg and was Smmooooth!

Okay, so I am on the slow track there. The first time I shaved my legs was at camp. I was about 10 and had been warned by my mother Never to shave them. (and why did I have my own razor? Some mixed message somewhere. Hairy pits?) Wow, the smooth sensation. I was hooked on the feeling. In fact razors and I are close. When I am getting ready for an event, I shave my legs. When I took a shower just before my wedding, out came the Gillette. Labor pains? Shower and shave. Chemo and no hair? Gillette and I were buddies along with Foamy for any important outing.

The past few days have been hot and muggy but it's raining now and about 67. Yay! Double triple yay because I don't have to water the garden AND the sprinkler man came over to church and turned on the sprinkler heads!

Garden Club tea yesterday (my building group, not church). We were steeled for the Young Ones to come and demand slides, swings, etc. Not one of them showed. Average age at the tea was easily 70. It turned out that the hostess and I know so many people in common it was like 1.5 degrees of separation! And she reads mysteries so we can trade books. Her bookcases have more than mine, but maybe she has more bookcases.... All in all it was fun. I think I heard the Garden Club president say I was hosting the tea next year. Say, What? I haven't done it in 40 years. I did it the first year my Mom was president. She is famous in our limited circles for putting in railroad ties to stop the erosion.

She is also famous because she was my mom and a wonderful person. I am still trying to achieve or try to be as accomplished as she was. Hard task. When I was a child I looked just like her in pictures of the comparable age. Once when I was washing the car (late teens) a woman walked past me, came back, and said, "Excuse me, are you Bessie Cutler?" I laughed and said no, I was her daughter. The lady had worked at The New York Times* with my mother.
As I get older, I think I look more like my father and his mother. This aging process is so interesting because I think I am more like my dad emotionally, or whatever is not physically.

I was thinking about taking an intensive course in Spanish in order to be able to communicate with the Latino congregation but Walter and Father Brown said I would be more useful being around the neighborhood during late July and early August, so nix to that and it is okay not to spend $1600. Dorothy will be away then and I wanted to be away, too. Guess I will have to buy a calling card for Portugal.

L&M gave me about 75 CDs to either list on www.lala.com or sell at a Flea Market. I input them tonight and had hits for 10 already. Since I only have 2 envelopes left I have prepared those and requested more from lala.

I received my second Fresh Direct delivery, eaten some prepared foods and thought about the others. I've decided that it might be good for people who work and have limited time, but without their coupon of $25.00 off on each of the first 2 deliveries it isn't such a good deal for a retired person who likes to read supermarket circulars. They are expensive and there is so much packaging material!!! Boxes, wraps, plastic! Yikes. Definitely back to shopping with my neighbor Jim on Tuesdays - easily save $10 a trip.

Pan called me this weekend as I was going to the tea. Good talk but too short. My turn to call next.

Out of here now!
Stay tuned.

*Both my parents worked at The Times in the 1930's. They met there and were married in 1934 I think. I am a true Child of The Times.

Later that same day

Who knew weeds in the garden would lead to a spiritual awakening and a seat on the Vestry. In fact, the weeds are in my mind more than the mysteries of Christianity. I mean, weeds you can understand. They need to be taken out, eradicated, made to become like the parrot*.

What am I babbling about? I had an X-COM meeting (not as thrilling as the X-Men at all) which is the Exec. Comm. of the Vestry. It was okay and over by 10ish. Then an extra meeting to find out about a check that was or was not sent to the Garden Club. End result: Home at 11:45.

And I skipped Novo music also. This could drive one to drink! In fact, I had a beer when I got home. Blood sugar or not. I earned it.

Interlude. . . . .

I just thought I saw an ant on the shelf, and in my frenzy to identify and eradicate it, I fell off the bed and rammed my right thumb. It is red and hurts. I am sure this is what Albert Schweitzer thought would happen if you tried to kill a living thing. Al - you are right! Or, maybe: Al - Right!!

I need sleep despite the fact that the bedroom is hot and I am not sleepy.

Nighty night.

*Parrot refers to the Monty Python skit about the Dead Parrot. Google it if you don't know.

The daily again, maybe.

The daily again, maybe.

Impossible to play catch up here.

I stopped posting because I post at bgbeta.blogspot.com, too. But that is free and I feel a loyalty to this. Not sure why. But why not?

Anyway, the remainder of my trip was fine. Brighton was fun. Weather good, hotel good, but not as good as having your own flat.

Life home on the domestic front with L&M is fine. Life at church is dysfunctional, lots of huffing and puffing. In fact, today I am skipping Wednesday tea and church service, but will go to the 8:00 meeting.

Good news, bad news. When I got home to plow through about 2 feet of mail, I found my blood work report. Good news, chloresterol down by almost 20 points. But blood sugar up over 110. Shit. So, since I read that I have been a sugar free zone. No sugar related products, cereal, cookies, etc. But it finally occured to me that alcohol is pure sugar. Arghh.

Between yesterday and the 12th when I have my next tapping, no alcohol. Along with no bad fat stuff. Eggs? What are they?

Weather now warm. We seem to have gone from 50s-80s with out an interlude of 60s & 70s. I am just starting to switch over the clothes. Today I looked for the Uber Space Bag. It is an under the bed rigid bottom container. Couldn't find one. Bought a good fan instead.

I went to DeL's to record a story for B1-K, then walked to new HD and BBB, about a mile or so away. Got foam airconditioner blocks, carpet stain remover (another story for another time) and a fan. Strangely HD had no garden fence. Maybe the one down Northern will.

Dorothy and I worked this weekend on the garden. Vika helped on Monday. She is a great worker and fun to have on the team. Then Monday night I went to Novo for jazz, saw almost all the Film Festival folks and Vika! Fun to have a neighborhood hangout.

I have to go get meds at 2 drug stores. I swear I will switch to B+B completely when I get my next prescriptions. Too much hassle back and forth.

Later.

Sun - Mon - Tues - Wed

Sunday: Dazzle - purchased a Nick Hubbard ring and a brooch. Went back to Art Fair and talked with founder of Art in Hospital.

Monday: Went to Willow Tea Room and looked up Joann Murray. Had great chat and will meet up Thursday for tea.
Finished Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Very disappointing. I think this is a book where you can't be an adult when reading it. Didn't work for me.

Tuesday: Rain, but okay rain. Went to the Tramway Airworld show. Fun, and a Hidden Garden that was a treat. the Chic pea and vegetable dhal with naan was daunting. And very orange. Had all day bus ticket so changed buses and went to Kelvingrove. Don't like the way they made it all touchy-feelie interactive.
Laundry. Finished my Doctor Who video.

Wednesday: Slept late, had breakfast and went to PO to mail a book to Tom and some papers I didn't want to carry around, then to the train station to confirm my sleeper reservation. ARGHHH! Nightmare! I didn't have one! The Railpass.com people totally f*(^ked up. Woman at the station snooty, too. Dashed back to flat and called Massachusetts to complain and they grovelled. No, I didn't have one, Oops!! Bad us. They are refunding my money, postage and handling charge. Jessica, the MA woman was very nice, though.

Called FirstScot to see if I could buy a sleeper reservation and they were sold out GRRRR, ARGHHH!!! There went that idea. No I am not sharing with 'another female'. Calm down. Rethink: Okay. Leaving Glasgow on Friday morning, the 27th, not Thursday night the 26th. Taking train to Euston, and yes, I do have a ticket. Somehow getting from Euston to Victoria to take train to Brighton.

Well, I will have a better night's sleep, and about $100 more money.

Doing laundry. Not feeling sorry for myself or mad at the train people. Must go watch football game now. I am addicted to English football.

Art Fair, Books, Art again

The week of culture continued. Thursday morning I was up early for the Art Fair. It was great, so much better than last year.

Several interesting galleries presented exhibits. Artists in Exile - refugees, asylum seekers and new immigrants. The work was powerful and I saw a connection between this and NICE in JH. NICE works with the same type of populations except here the people are from Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Art in Hospital, a project whereby artists go to hospitals and hospices to work with patients has produced some wonderful work. Last year I spoke at length with the founder and wonder why we don't have something like it. This year I looked at the works and found a piece, mixed media, that I really liked. The exhibit guide said only buy something if you like it. I went back three times and finally decided I wanted it. But when I went to pay with credit card, they only took cash! Hmm, since the flat is about half a block away, I asked them to put a sticker on it and dashed back for some cash. I also got the book which describes the project and profiles some of the artists.

I did see one work, a print, that had a date and was tempted to buy it, but (1) I didn't like it much and (2) it cost GBP 100. Not at the current exchange rate, thanks.

After leaving the art fair I headed to the art store and bought a piece of foam core. Back at the flat I made a rigid but light package to mail the picture home and took it to the PO.

Good fun for Thursday.

Friday I spent most of the day reading Louise Perry's first book Still Cold. I forgot how stunned I get after this - reading for a long time.

I got an email from a friend saying her sister died after a battle with cancer. My first inclination was to call, but AZ is even earlier than NY, so I sent an email. I probably would have been crying on the phone, so I will call her when I get back. Marnie, the sister, was very kind to me when I was little, and I've never forgotten it.

Saturday, today, I woke up early, then nodded off again. Finally made some coffee and breakfast, checked mail, etc. and did some research.

Artists in Exile had a reception this afternoon at their space so I went there for a while and chatted with Fiona, the woman in charge. More powerful art.

Then a hunt around bookstores for some books my DIL is looking for. Forbidden Planet, A1 Comics, Borders, Waterstones, W.H. Smith - EHHH! No dice. Will consult tomorrow on a revised plan.

Came back after ambling around in time to see Doctor Who in 1930's NYC. The Daleks are back, and it was part 1 - continued next week.

Ten o' clock and I am thinking of turning in. Tomorrow is the first day of Dazzle! the traveling jewellery show. I've been twice before and really like Nick Hubbard's silver work. I think I have 2 pieces of his.

Okay, battery low, brain power low.

Outta here.

Music night - Fab

Joshua Bell & Academy of St. Martin's in the Fields! Wow! Beethoven program. Terrific and it seemed like the orchestra was having fun too! Such energy he has. I had 2nd row seat.

Sorry to be writing in shorthand, but I am exhausted! I dined at the Concert Hall on something with a forgetable name, but was excellent beef stew, savoy cabbage and 'mustard mash' (mashed potatoes with mustard) and a salad that sounds like it wouldn't go together but did - watercress, fennel, rocket (arugula) and pear.

Today I mailed off a present to Msbelle's son. I don't know when his b'day is, or was, but I got him a ball that starts out like a Frisbee when you toss it, then pops into a ball. I don't know what 6 year olds like, but the card had SpiderMan on it and I know he likes that.

Today the flat got 2 new dining chairs. Olive, ochre sort of. I should take a picture. I think they are changing from the blue, and beige theme.

Tired tired zzzzzz. Art show tomorrow and definitely LAUNDRY!

Watch what you eat! Lost in translation??

I constantly discover the subtle differences in our languages. Today I went to a restaurant, perused the menu, and decided on a BLT. I should have remembered - British/UK/Scottish? bacon includes the part we call Canadian Bacon, and the regular US bacon that they call Streaky Bacon. What a handful, let alone stomach full. And it came with chips, not US chips, proper British 'French (what was it Bushie called them? Liberty Fries)'. Not hungry for dinner, at all.

Today was more Scottish - sun, drizzle, sun, clouds, drizzle, more sun and temps in the 50s. Wind was 'fresh' which means zip up your coat but leave the hat at home.

Mailed postcards and some magazines home today. So amazing how heavy paper is.

I hear the British inflation rate has jumped to 3.5% and that food is more expensive. No shit, Sherlock. It also means the GBP is over $2.00. Que sera sera.

One of my favorite TV shows started this week, season 3 or 4 of 'Sea of Souls' with Bill Paterson. I could watch him read the phone book! Speaking of TV: if you followed 'Life on Mars' on BBC America, the series concluded last week. Also, strange things are happening on 'Foyle's War'. 'Doctor Who' has that perennial favorite, The Daleks (EXTERMINATE!!) coming back this Saturday. And tomorrow they will be filming scenes for 'Rebus' outside my window. I will either have a great view, or go out and gawk. Depends when they begin and when I wake up.

Tomorrow night is Joshua Bell and the Academy of St. Martin's in the Fields at the Concert Hall. Looking forward to culture and wearing a skirt. Also eating at the concert hall restaurant which is quite nice and posh.

Sent more personalized post cards today. I think I have to go back to Boots to make more pictures. Now if I could only figure out how to get the pictures from my cell phone to print. . .

On a roll!

Arran?

Rotten sleep last night. I kept dreaming I was still doing my job, but had retired. I kept telling people I didn't need to be here, I wasn't being paid, just loved to do researh. Odd dreaming of ways to get home, too.

I guess I was waiting for the alarmS to ring. Won't go, I said, No. Not today. 7:04 the second alarm. I get up, make coffee. Check email after kicking my laptop. Ok, not kicking, just popping the battery pack out again - cussing until the count of 10 then putting it back. Nothing important except a sunscreen warning from Matt. Heeded.

Shower, dress, What the heck, I might as well go. So on to the train to Ardrossan Harbor. Had a really unPC breakfast on the CalMac ferry to Arran - 2 fried eggs, toast and bacon (English style), coffee. Lots of blue sky, some clouds but the temps were in the high 50-low 60 range. I was wearing the Bubble Gum Barbie jacket and blue fleece socks, so okay there.

The train went past gentle rolling hills, sheep in fields and my first glimpse of a wind power farm. They look like Tripods*.

Arran: beautiful island in the Firth of Clyde. More prosperous than 2 years ago, and light years from my first visit in 1987. More building projects, more industries - Arran Aromatics, Arran Breweries, many hotels refurbished. The mussels that had covered the rocks in 2005 seem to have gone - leaving the rocks exposed. I saw a beautiful piece of pink quartz embedded in the sandstone. It wasn't ready to 'pop' out leaving a moon crater yet.

Walked along the shore, went to the Burnside Gallery and admired the art - no dates. Continued to the Auchrannie Hotel, asked for a brochure, wandered the gift shop, and headed for the toilets. Nothing like knowing the territory (I was there for a week in 2005). I then walked back to the ferry terminal, stopping in all the gift shops and the COOP where I bought some 'Rocket' (arugula). In the past 20 years the COOP has 'continentalized', where you can buy whole selections of Polish products even!

I got some funky socks, cotton, in case it gets warmer (besides, they go with my jacket), and some cortisone cream for a strange rash I've gotten on my face.

Ferry ride and train uneventful. As soon as I got back I went to Somerfield Supermarket and bought more for dinner.

I was cold, no lunch, so when I got back, I donned the sweatshirt, cranked up the heat and ate. After all that, I fixed the DVD player, watched a Doctor Who episode, called Velma, and am now about to sign off and go to bed,

Happy Trails to you, Until we meet again!

*Tripods are aliens which play a big part in a trilogy for Young Adults. Author is John Christopher. Books are great!

the wonderful day

April 14th. I woke up, had breakfast, washed me, washed up and got to the train station in time for the 8:42 to Montrose. A cloudy start to the day, but forecast was for excellent weather. Following my instructions from www.planajourney.co.uk I asked the way to town so I could catch the #30 bus. But! Look! There was the #30 at the train station! Do you go to Brechin? I ask. Aye, Breekin. Close enough. I got on and chatted with a sweet lady with dandielion blow hair. After being assured that the 21A to Aberlemno would stop at the Brechin bus stop, I got off. I had a 40 minute wait for the bus and the stop is located in front of an antique shop. (Great placement!) In I go and 35 minutes later and GBP 16 lighter I leave. Terrific couple, I heard all about the merchant navy, children living in all parts of the world and many other interesting things. I bought: 1 silver ring, 2 souvenier spoons from NZ (for Tammy) and a scale. The kind you hang up and it has a hook and you hang things from it. Made in NY in the 1800s. Then off to Aberlemno on the bus, the 21A.

Aberlemno stop is opposite the bus shelter. The 'town' seems to be 4 houses, lots of plowed fields, many standing stones (my objective) and friendly people. I talked for a while with a couple who are restoring a coaching station from 1650. We commiserated about the standards set by landmarking committees. I took a picture of the little man who guards the corner of their roof.

Off down the road to the first stone. Hmm. Interesting, but small. Then the next stone. Big, carved on the front with a cross and a hunting scene on the back. Picture worthy. Then first left and on to the church with 'the' stone cross. Subject of the journey. It sits in the graveyard but looks alien. Since it was created in the 7th century and the oldest stones I saw were from the 17th century, it isn't hard to figure out why. It is really beautiful and I took lots of pictures. I only hope with skillful editing they turn out well.

Of course I also took pictures of gravestones and my socks with a flower. A couple came along and we chatted for a long while. They have a house over the hill (east, I guess) and are hoping to move up permanently. I can see why. The area is soft rolling hills, some trees, but mostly farms. The day was perfect - a bit misty, but sunny and warm. We went into the little church which was very plain, no adornments except the parish list of births on the wall. There was a gallery upstairs. This is Church of Scotland - Presbyterian? No stained glass, certainly no smells and bells.

When I finally left, I realized I still had 45 minutes until the bus came, so I sat on the bench in the sun and took notes. Then I walked down to the bus shelter, then I walked back to the second standing stone (stele) and sat on the grass enjoying the peace around me.

Oops, time to go back to wait for the bus. Oh oh! The bus, the 21A!! A few minutes early, but maybe he didn't have many pickups.

Now I must explain that this trip was planned as follows: Train to Montrose, Bus to Brechin, Bus to Aberlemno. Return: Bus to Forfar, Bus to Dundee, Train to Glasgow.

I get on and ask, is this the bus to Forfar? No. This is the bus to Brechin. Oh. Do you know when the bus for Forfar arrives? No, this is my first day on the route.

Okay, what the heck, I get on. We get to Brechin, 5 minute wait for the bus to Montrose, I get off at the train station. So? 25 minute wait until the bus to Glasgow. I nip into the supermarket, pick up stuff for dinner (save myself some time) and get on the train to Glasgow at 3:17.

Home by 5:30, just in time to watch Manchester United win their semi-final match for the FA cup, and to watch Doctor Who.

A glorious day.

Sunday, today, I woke up at 9:30 had a drink of water, then next I knew it was 2:30!
Made coffee and breakfast, checked my email, called Dorothy for a long chat and watched Chelsa win their semi-final match in overtime.

Just to prove I'm not a complete slug, I am doing a load of laundry. . .

Tomorrow, one more day left on my train pass - perhaps Arran for the day.

Stay tuned.

Wonderful day!

I had a glorious day. As the Wallace & Gromit short title was: A Grand Day Out. That's the good news, the bad is that I am so tired I can't write it all out.

Tomorrow, I promise.

Bagpipes out my window

And I'm not sure why. Things are always happening here. Och, lads and lassies, y've missed me.
Well, I'm back and have had adventures!

After finishing another excellent book, a Quebecois police procedural mixed with a 'cosy' called 'Still Cold' I have finally stirred. I slept through Easter - woke up about 3 in the afternoon. Easter Monday is a holiday here so lots of stores were closed, but the modern art museum was open, so I wandered in there a bit.

Wednesday I went to Edinburgh to locate the picture described in Early German Painting from 1350-1550 so I could see if it had a date. I validated my train pass and took the 45 minute ride to the Capital. Before I went to the National Gallery, I went to the Scottish Academy exhibits. Very much fun. Lots of mixed media work. Took some pictures of penguins covered in mirrored tiles.

Now you can walk underground to the National Gallery - this must have been the big project they were working on the last time I was here. I located the research center, figured it was the place to begin. Logical. I spoke to the head librarian 'I am the Library' she said. At first she was a bit cold, but I'd done my homework and gave her the correct title, etc. Their books are cataloged on 3x6 pieces of paper held together with screw posts (Yikes!!). She found the book on the shelf and I located the picture on p. 65. Now my mission was really to find the picture in the collection and look at that, not the black & white book illustration. Well, what a hunt! Penny (she had warmed to me), the assistant (I am not really the Library?) and me watching, searched their in house data base, another art data base and guess what? The damn picture isn't in their collection. As I was leaving Penny said, "Well, you'll have to call the Thyssen and tell them they are wrong!" I said, don't worry, Tom speaks German. We ended on a happy note even though the trip was for nought.

Feeling a bit peckish and it being about 5, I decided to go to that culinary delight, Spud U Like for a baked potato. Yum, coleslaw and cheese. Oops, too much onion in the coleslaw, but I was so hungry I almost ate the styrofoam plate. I decided to make an Art Photo of my notes, the dated receipts and my food tray. I will upload it later on. I strolled onto the 5:45 train and got home by 7.

Thursday I was thinking of going to Aberlemno, but it was cloudy when I woke up at 8, so I rolled over and went to sleep again. When I did get up I kept thinking, the 12th, what is it about the 12th? Ahh, the new Doctor Who Adventures magazine comes out! So I took a big long walk around town, then headed for W. H. Smith and their Tardis cardboard magazine holder and there it was! And a free pencil case, pen, ruler (centimeters only), and 2 erasers. And there were two versions. Oh yes, I bought both. Cheap fun. Made a nice dinner, did the laundry, worked out the schedule for going to Aberlemno on Friday. If I haven't explained before, this town has a Celtic cross with a battle scene on the back that I need to photograph. One train and 2 buses and it better be within sight of the bus stop or I am screwed. But a Glasgow cabbie told me once, Ye'll never be lost as long as ye've got a tongue in yer head.

Friday, up early, wash, dress, make bed, breakfast - coffee, yogurt, juice, digestive biscuit. Out the door, walk to the train station. Ah, there it is, track 5. I nip into Smith's for a paper. Come out. Gone. Left. Departed. But, but, but. . yes, the trains DO leave on time in Scotland. Oh well, the next train is in an hour. Yeah, but who wants to hang around the train station for an hour? Hmm, where else can I go? How about Falkirk? Okay. So five minutes later I'm on the train to Falkirk. Why?

Well, Falkirk has this really cool thing called the Falkirk Wheel. It is a device that takes the place of 9 locks on a canal. It links the Union Canal and the Forth & Clyde Canal. You can go from the east coast, Edinburgh, to the west coast, Glasgow by boat. There is a tourist trip on a barge boat that explains it all. Go to www.thefalkirkwheel.co.uk for more. It was a beautiful sunny day, the landscape lovely, great people to talk to and an all around excellent substitute for my missed train.

When I got back here, I spent about 20 minutes online figuring out if I could make my trip on Saturday. Yes. But the logistics are completely different from the ones I had first planned. A train to Montrose, bus to Brechin, bus to Aberlemno. Back it is Aberlemno, Forfar, Dundee, Glasgow.

So stay tuned. Right now I'm washing a dark wash. The teeny tiny washer dryer takes about 2 hours to damp dry the clothes. All chairs, drawer handles and hangers are in use after my laundry is done.

More exciting adventures later.

Beside the Oceans of Time

I think that's the title of George MacKay Brown's book. It was a great book, but the title reminds me of why I've meant to be here but haven't. Sometimes, I am just lazing in the shallow end of the pool, or in the lagoon, to use the correct term, and time just flows by. Hmmm. Flow would mean river. Okay, but you know what I mean.

Sunny days, cool nights, long walks, people watching, they all flow together. Nothing gripping on the telly, but books to read.

So far, two: Friends, Lovers, Chocolate and The Spanish Game. The first was an excellent Scottish cosy with nothing much happening and the second a book by a young wannabe John Le Carre. Damn the stores here. I have no resistance for book stores, especialy when the have Buy 1 Get 1 half off, or Buy 2 Get 3. I lasted 5 days before I broke down and bought one. Then yesterday, I went to Borders to get a Starbucks and came out with 3 books, a DVD - Doctor Who Christmas Special on sale, a newspaper and no Starbucks. Yikes. The next book I am going to read is a Quebecois police procedural. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, mais oui!

Saints be Praised! The shower is fixed! Lucky for me as No. 11 is now occupied. It was not the shower unit, it was the switch. I know the poor Plumber's Apprentice tested the electrical switch several times, but he didn't unscrew it to see the insides were crispy-fried. His boss did, and called the electrician. Also Boss was threatening to 'have a word with the young lad'. Hmm. There was a family resemblance, so maybe it was his son. I prefer the thought of 'boxing about the ears'. Just a language thing.

Today Steve the electrician arrived, gave a running commentary on the failings of the LAST electrician, put in a new box, I heard the wonderful sounds of running water and thanked him very much. He then went off to play golf.

And they say you need a higher education degree to have a good life.

Big sneezing attack today & runny nose. I took a UK Benedryl and was out like a light. No sneezes, no runny nose. Just completely stoned.

I would still be asleep except for the calls from Mauricio, Matt, Mauricio, Mauricio, Matt and David, and my calls to Jim and Dorothy. The bathroom and window sill are done. Matt and Jim approve, payment has been made and arranged for (the extras). I didn't have to listen to the banging, or know that the sub-floor was completely shot and required 150 lbs of concrete to level it.

Been following the JHfamilies group site. I've decided the problem is all these people who have no support group except eachother - moved away from home. Lots of dithering about tax accountants, home owners insurance, and the owner of the only bar with draft beer being arrested in a gambling ring. Fervent wishes for his acquittal as many of us want to troop down for the pleasure of a 'pulled pint'.

Regarding going to Aberlemno, I went to the Tourist Board and found it easy to get to by 1 train and 2 busses. Was going to go yesterday, a beautiful day, but figured if I waited until next week my Rail Pass which is only good for 8 days wouldn't run out too soon.

Went to GoMA to see a new art exhibit. Hard to explain - it is about the different cultures in Glasgow as represented by the two major football teams: the Rangers and the Celtics. Rangers are supported by the Protestants, and the Celtics the Catholics. Almost 30 years ago, Matt and I were staying in Inverness on our way to Skye. We saw a powerful TV movie on the subject. Until then I had no idea that there was sectarian violence anywhere but Ireland.

The Lighthouse, the museum of architecture has an exhibition of movies made over a period, 1920-1978, by the City Council. Exhibition entitled Happieness Sadness is about the effects of housing and benefit programs on the city. I've seen one of the four sets, and my ticket is good for returning to finish seeing them. I love this stuff. The viewing areas are set up as period rooms and I was in the one from the 1950s.

What else? Took some pictures, printed them and sent them out as postcards. That was fun.

Tonight is the beginning of a 4 day holiday period and the youths are out celebrating. One of the down sides of being on the town square. With the bedroom in the back it will be fine.

Signing off.

Sunday, the day of rest

And rest I did. Woke up about 10, had breakfast and went back to sleep until 2:30. Beautiful day, sun streaming in the windows, I slept.

Hopped over to #11 for a shower then out for Starbucks. Lost the thread though, and bought a bag of coffee for less than one Grande. Also fresh veggies and the paper. A luxurious rest of the afternoon drinking French Roast coffee and reading the paper.

My walkabout was about an hour. Lots more good people watching. Temps in low 60s I think. Short sleeve shirt and jacket.

I bought the Doctor Who magazine. On the basis of a really great show last night. Monsters, explosions, lots of running about. Roy Marsden was in it, until the Plasmphore sucked out all his blood with a bendy straw. And the rhino headed mercenarys were good monsters. The new companion seems like a winner, too. So the magazine came with markers, a sketch book and a plastic folder with the Tardis on it. What more could a girl want?

It is so quiet here. Lovely.

Can't sleep as much tonight because Christine will be coming for the keys. And besides, I forgot how badly #11's shower drips on the floor. And also the plumber will be coming. And besides, getting back to a day schedule is better than being a night owl.

Ottaker's, a local Scottish book seller is gone now. Eaten up by one of the UK chains. I am looking for some DVDs on local Glaswegian history. Guess it is Waterstone's or Borders. And I read that Borders is going to close or franchise their European branches which means the huge one down the street is going to change. When I first came here there was John Smith Booksellers, Dillon's, Ottaker's, Blackwell's and Waterstone's. Is this progress?

I made a fresh vegetable combo with basil and soft cheese to top my spaghetti. The flat has no salt or pepper, so I need to wander in to BK or MickyD to get some.

Ok, I'm outta here.

March 31

Slept really late - noon. The sun streaming in the window and I was all warm and comfy. MMmm.

Got up, made coffee - 2 filters full. Not much of a buzz. Bummer. Ate cottage cheese and pineapple for breakfast. Yum.

Took advantage of the shower offer and went across the way.

I went out, more to buy a paper than to do heavy shopping. Bought some food, looked in the Gap to see how much my $29.99 pants cost here. Not surprisingly - GBP 29.50. Lots of good people watching on a Sat. The Goths all congregate behind Borders - a sea of spiky pink/green/purple hair and Lots of black clothes.

Must have caffeine! Must have coffee! I went to Starbucks and got a Latte Grande. Ahhhh, that was better.

My flowers still smell wonderful and I fixed the shades so the front window are completely up. No one can see in because I face the top of the Council building. I see birds.

Doctor Who new season starts in a few minutes. Certainly the high point of my day! I have never seen David Tennant (own but haven't seen last season) and there is a new Companion. If this is all mysterious to you, dear reader, Google "Doctor Who" + BBC and read all about it.

Plans? Umm. Go to the Modern Art Museum? Brunch at the place around the corner? Read the paper in the Square? Don't have any idea. Stay tuned.

March 30 posting

Well, if you can't post one place, do another. Plan B.

The shower really doesn't work. Christine, the apt. manager and friendly person I've been talking with each time I stay, called the plumber. He said they will have to order a new unit and it won't be here until Monday. Boo. But, she gave me the key to Flat 11, right next door and vacant, so I can shower over the weekend if I want to. YAY!

Had trouble getting to sleep last night, but woke at 7, said Good Grief, and rolled over. The alarm got me up at 8:45 and I made coffee. Good, but not enough. Tomorrow I will double the amount.

Didn't do much, wandered around, Thank goodness for Pound Saver shops, equivalent to 99 cent stores. I got washcloths (6 for a pound) because, as usual I forgot. I definitely have more purchased abroad than I do bought in the US. Also tissues. When I travel my nose runs for a day or two or three.

More construction work being done in the city. I wish I'd taken more general pictures when I first started coming here. Then I'd be able to compare. Fortunately they like to rehab rather than raze, so maybe that is why I am not shocked when I come back. But there is this weird quilted metal skinned building on Watt St. I have to take a look at. I can't tell if it's protection while something is being done to it or an 'architectural statement' I missed.

Just saw the last 5 minutes of the movie 'Michael'. I really like the ending. Movie? Eh, but Andie McDowell does a great song in it.

Going to be sunny for the weekend. Nice.

No plans, and that's fine.

Back - here AND in Glasgow

Uh huh.

The briefish gap in my postings were/are due to lots of niggling things. You know, the thises and thats of the world. And the planning of my trip to Scotland.

Yes, here I am. It is 10 at night here but I am listening the WQXR radio station 5:00 news. If you are of a certain age, I don't think you could ever imagine that, (a) you would be renting a flat in Scotland for about a month. and (b) most definitely NOT be listening to a NYC radio station on your (c) Laptop??? Oh, I forgot the 2 cell phone calls I got a few hours ago from the Son Unit.

A brief review: Maxjet Airways sent me an email saying they were having a limited time half-price round trip rate, but it would end on X day. Sensibly, I said to myself, Self - don't be tempted. . . .Another email - Hey, we are extending the sale until March 12th (buy the ticket but fly until Sept.). Self said: Why not? And Self booked for March 28th, returning May 3rd. It took about 90 seconds online.

Oh yes:
How to get from London to Glasgow? The first time I looked at the EasyJet fare it was $60, but it went up to $90 by the time I booked it.

Then: Well, what else is happening there? Oh, concerts, craft fairs, jewelry show, spring flowers, Glasgow Art Fair. Okay, that sounds like fun.

And where are you staying? Quick! Call SACO serviced apartments, is anything available from 03/29-04/30? Yes? YAY!!!

But, what will you do after you leave Glasgow on April 30? Two days? I spent hours exploring ideas on the web. London is outrageously expensive and I was just there. Wales? Fun, but the expression, you can't get there from here applies when going from North to Southish West. Scillys, the same. Hmm.

Brighton, or as they once had a t-shirt I regret not buying: BRightOn! A special at the Grand Hotel (www.devere.co.uk). Brighton is fun, the Grand is Grand, and the price was so much lower for 5 nights than 2 nights in London, that I will be leaving Glasgow on the 26th, taking the Sleeper train to London, navigating the Underground system from Euston Station to Victoria and taking the train to Brighton on the 27th. Rain or shine, the place is fine! (the sleeper isn't cheap anymore but fun.)

The last leg: Leaving Brighton, getting to Liverpool Station (more Underground Orienteering), taking the Stansted Express to the airport, staying overnight at the airport hotel (the same one that Maxjet gave me a coupon to use this morning to 'freshen up' at) and home on a morning flight on the 3rd.

The trip was amazingly non-eventful. Bag packed fine, no sitting to close. Cab was on time, traffic fine. Lounge boring but okay. Flights fine, airport to town bus was cheap and dropped me off across the square from the flat. Flat is fine.

So here I am. I took a little nap (three phone calls put the end to That), decided to shop for food rather than go to the concert tonight, bought myself a lovely bouquet of spring flowers for the bedroom, had a healthy dinner and am finishing a glass of rose.

Tomorrow the Flat manager (a woman I've had many conversations with in the past - all pleasant) is coming over, then I will go exploring and see how many ways I can have fun.

It is great to be back. Here and Here!

Celt of a different cloth

Yep, despite being mostly French (to my great surprise), I regard myself as of the Scottish rather than the Irish breed of Gael. But aren't they all Celts? Too late to do the research to find out. Needless to say no green bagels or beer here.

Wuzz up? 14th was vestry meeting, followed by call from friend in AZ. Sleep time? Not much. 15th was taking MsBelle's MAC to doc in 'the city' followed by stop in to Willa, followed by home and sleep. I think.

Small glitch, unless I mentioned this before: the bathroom sink was sloooow draining so I used the plunger. Uh huh. A very good way to pull up all the disgusting sludge and stray leaves that have been blocking our Octogenarian drain pipes. I left the grossness in the sink, too tired and dispirited to deal. Late Friday it drained and I bleached the heck out of it and closed the drain.

Still feeling low so cancelled all Friday and Saturday appointments. Rescheduled M for Saturday AM. He came, assessed the work I would like done, hung a cool lamp for me and as he was doing that the House Prez called and wanted him to do work in the Super's apt. Yay for personal recommendations. Then he went 'Kinnward' amd fixed the armoire.

Feeling low: Too much emotional stuff. I got so good at ZIP filing my emotions that when they began to unzip, I feel completely bereft. It is a strong possibility that this is why I've been running a fever. Seeing Saul on Monday anyway.

I also had breakfast with BP-F. Such a great person. I hope we can continue to work together.

Is that all? Haven't been out since the sleet storm started and going a little stir crazy. Laundry, trying to turn the Room of Doom back into the Guest Room, these are positive things!

Vestry approved the Pruning Project. Now I have to line up a liaison to work with Green Rose while I'm away.

I seem to be rambling. Tomorrow is church - I do OT, then meeting with FRB+, then brunch with M. then?

Stay tuned.

Fever, chills, lethargy - is it Spring?

Saturday night. No sleep. Well, 4:30 to wake at 6:30. Up, church, home, chills, under 2 comforters, sleep an hour. Bone chillingly cold, up, hot shower. Very hot, lobster Betsy. Dry, on with the sweats, fleece socks, sweater, fleece jacket, fleece hat. Ahhh. Warm. Sleep 4 hours, wake up drenched. Wash off, change clothes, watch tv, read paper, repeat hot, cold. Shower at 5:50. Awake until 6. Deep sleep but supposed to get up at 8 to get to church at 9. Awakened by DIL call at 9:35. ARGHH! Throw on clothes, rush over to church, feel s*(&^!, count money, take to bank. Come home, eat, have coffee and struggle to stay awake by cleaning up and trying not to think about why I feel so awful. V calls @11:30 and I tell her my tale of woe. She keeps me up until 12:30 when I say, Bathtime! Bath and sleep, glorious sleep. Until she calls me to wake me up at 9:30! And then at 9:35. She knows me so well.

Off to BMG for some serious emotional calesthenics which left me drained, shaken, feeling raw like I'd been sand-papered. That is what happens when you try to stuff things down. Oh, sorry, are in denial. Going to be a tough time ahead.

On the good news front:

Made the flight reservations, got notice tonight that SACO has a place for me in Glasgow.

The bulbs at church are looking strong and not damaged too much by the crazy January weather.

I think I have all the financing in place for the pruning work at church. Friends and family and lovers of things growing.

Martha is coming on Friday. Always good to have a clean place.

Okay, my head is hurting so I'm going to take something and see if I can get over this illness without calling the doctor.

Lost in Translation

So I have this vision of pruning the trees at the church. I tell M&C that I would, with their approval, solicit bids. Ok. I solicit bids (3). I review said bids, and based on quality of same, personal recommendations, pricing, pick one. Submit it. Yes? No? I ask who has to OK it. A person. A committee. I submit bid to committee. Lukewarm/negative response. I spell out how work can be funded. And we are talking really small words here.

I receive call from head person querying me as to whether I had been in contact with my main contact (got that?). No, other than submitting recommendation on paper. Why? Chain of command I say. HP says, you know the individuals involved and that is all you did? No follow up? No, other than emailing the whole committee with a wonderfully written and edited (by my BDF) letter and the proposal. I relied on chain of command.

So what am I missing here? Should I have followed up with a friendly call? I thought it might be interpreted as nagging and act against me. What did HP mean? Was HP panicking? If work is not approved then I have DMM up in arms.

You know, Florida sounds mighty good right now. And Scotland. Very very good.

On a brighter note, my partner and I accomplished a lot today on the book. And had sushi.

If I were a creative person, I'd like to do a big painting of axons and neurons firing. I would use little LEDs scattered randomly through out the canvas, flashing randomly. Hmm. I think I will investigate this. Anything is possible now a days if you can master the technology.

I might have to fulfill my longing for Indian food tomorrow. Japanese, Latin, Thai in the last week, but the good old JH specialty, Indian - mmmmm good! And a poke around the Indian supermarket. I found a pre-packaged Indian food that was so good! Tasty Bites. Catchy name, but organic, or almost. Vegetarian or vegan, no MSG, preservatives, good labeling.

So I am rambling, but why not, huh! In fact I'm not sure why I use pseudonyms and initials, IS ANYBODY OUT THERE???

Wednesday early and late

Then: Sleeping late; coffee; call from Velma ; call to Dorothy; call from Willa; shower, dress. Dressing in this weather is a many-layered thing. Off to lunch with FRB. Good talk. Good Thai.
Food shopping, be sure to take off hat in order to get Sr. Citizen discount (just in case they couldn't tell). Home & delivery. We arrived at same time. Efficient.

Email answering, Lala discs packed up, more phone calls. Off to 5 o'clock tea and service, held in parish house because of lack of heat in church. Saw my little munchkin friends Michaylea and Hayden. Cuties.

Home, check email, call Lisa, call FRB, down to Novo for SAMBA night. Yes, support those starving musicians. The first hour was quiet and empty but not without good moments. The Latino man who did the cha-cha with the singer. Sweet, poignant.

Then the place filled up and of course the 2 Degrees of Separation kicked in and I met Tom's Watson boss and one of his colleagues who happens to be the SIG-OTH of Jim the guitarist.

I left about 9:50, happy with my steak high, and home to check email. Replies to my plea for tree work. Both were polite but not positive. I replied that the work should be done and could be financed (God damnit) so get off your butts. No, of course I didn't say that.

Read the current headlines, played some computer games and here I am!!! 12:30 on Thursday morning. Now you are completely up to date on NOW. But when you read it, it will be THEN.

What can I say? Perhaps this blog should have been entitled 'Beside the Ocean of Time'. Title of a book by an Orcadian poet/novelist, George Mackey Brown.

Whatever.

Yikes!

Georgia, Georgia, the whole night through. . .No, I'm not in a Ray Charles mood, that is the font (type face) I am using. Like it and Garamond a lot.

Why Yikes? I was just browsing www.lala.com and listed a few more discs and Bam! 4 people want them. Cool. It was within seconds, well, a few minutes.

What's up recently? Cat sitting. Worked well, except I overslept one day and had to gradually work back to the regular schedule of 8 & 8. Orbi hid in the closet but Sola was friendly and vocal and sat on me for an hour or two. M says she is calmer when I've been there. Nice, but I think he is flattering me.

Church doings are doing. I continue to be amazed the way people treat each other in church. Not during the service, but in dealings relating to matters related. If God was the HR director, most of them, and me included, would be out on my ear. And I'm one of the ones who tries! This merits a Yikes!

Sank into a funk this weekend partially because of anti-allergy meds, partially 'that ol' devil depression'. I slept most of Saturday but bounced back Sunday, for the most part.

Sunday was the alternative St. Pat's parade in Queens. Was going to go, but decided to stay home and do scanning. I did finish February and loaded it onto a disc, copy for M, copy for T.
April will be for tomorrow. It takes about 3+ hours from start to finish but now I see the plan unfolding for a prospectus. T is writing the copy, M is formatting and I am wracking the brain to write a coherent, persuasive introduction.

The intro gives me a bad flashback to trying to write my law school essay. After 4 hours of no inspiration, I realized I didn't want to be a lawyer at all, so I tore up the applications and threw them in the garbage. And this was a Very Good Thing.

Monday - back to counting. The office was locked and I was tired, so risked the Wrath of IAS, didn't photocopy the checks and just went to the bank. What with cat duty at 8:30, $$$ from 9-12, I was so over my responsibilities! Went to Jahn's for brunch -diet turkey burger plate, then home to tidy up for the cleaning lady.

Monday 7 - meeting of Film Festival group. Bryan runs a mean meeting. We were out by 8:40. Chris brought Malcom who was a real hit with everyone. He is a cutie pie and a nice peaceful baby from what Chris says. Rita, Barrie & I went to Novo for music. Kisses and Coronas all around. Ricky Castro came in, I mentioned to Barrie he has a coop for sale. Upshot, we finished eating & drinking and went to look at Ricky's. Home by 10!

Today up with a call from Velma. I had called her at work yesterday, but had the week messed up - she goes back Next week. Good chat, then shower to get ready for Martha and out to Bernie. Temps in the single digits, so thermal underwear, many layers and I was ready. Good session in FH. I wasn't surprised given the topic and I felt much better talking it out.

Off to Sears for Blue Tape, caulking and paint remover. What a bummer. Only tape. So back to JH and LI Janitor Supply, a really strange store, but they had caulking and at least some labels to read of stripper. What I really want to find is a 'Dip and Strip' place for the doors. Jim H. and I are both looking so I said I'd do some posting and calling around, then pool info.

Msbelle asked me to shepherd MAC to Super Soccer in April. No problem if I am here, and as of the moment, I have no plans.

I sent an email to the Building and Grounds Committee with Green Rose's proposal attached and a plea for approval of the work. I called my favorite editor, LD for help. She cleaned it up and vastly improved it. Hope it works. D & I view the pruning as a priority, esp. the trees that seem to have dead limbs. Sounds like a no brainer, but committees being what they are..

Lunch tomorrow with FRB, tea, church, then down to Novo for the first night of Brazilian Music. Frankly I don't know diddily about it, but Nathan and Jim are going to play and I've heard the singer before and thought she was good. Besides, there might be a steak down there with my name on it.

Someone asked me why I had a blog. I think it is so I won't let the days drift by. Retirement can do that to you.

Happy Birthday Thomas!

Been a busy week so far:

Monday
I counted money with Allen, he and I met with FRB+, then I met with FRB+ and then I had a really nice talk with Irene, FRB+'s wife. Oops! 1:00 and first meeting of the Gang O' Four: TEF, StoPro, Rock Hunter & The Enforcer! is only an hour away. Runnish home with the church funds, make bed, fluff pillows, stow messes and ladders (don't ask), make brownies and wait.

We met and it was good. The Enforcer herded the cats and Rock enlightened us. Brownies and popcorn were eaten, Coke, hot water and coffee drunk, assignments were - assigned, and all left a little after 5.

I was starving and grumpy that the church's snow hadn't been shoveled and sent a snotty email out. Chalk it up to hunger and tiredness. This didn't stop me from bundling up and going down to Novo at 6:30 to listen to the jazz and eat a steak. If you have read previous entries, you will know that medium rare steak is the best Happy Pill I could ever have!! MMMMmmm!

To my delight Maia and Sasha (20 months) and Val and Jacob (24 months) came to listen to the music, too. Val and I worked on the film festival together and Maia and I met online - kindred music spirits. We all had a great time talking and watching the kids dance.

Ricky Castro was there with crutches! He tore his ankle ligaments when he slipped on the ice. Fortunately it was work-related (or not because it still is painful!). We talked for a while, then we walked home. Nice to live on the same block.

Tuesday morning I woke up early, but was so beat I called Jim and said, NO shopping. He agreed because he had dental work done the day before and was really uncomfortable. I went to the bank to deposit the money, then splurged on a cab to Forest Hills to see Bernie. Worth the money even though the radio station was 'New Light something or another'. Afterwards I wanted to go have some retail therapy but remembered that my carpet was being returned. I waited. And waited. And waited some more. But they finally came, laid the living room rug and then took the other one to the store room. Now all I have to do is pick up the couch slipcover and the room will look decent again. I had a surge of energy last night and decided to do a timed scanning. It took an hour and 7 minutes to do 20 scans. The time would have been shorter if the scanner worked better and I was more facile in taking the pictures out of the folders and reinserting them. Overall, not a bad time though. The project shouldn't take THAT long. A warm bath with Breakers bath crystals and I was asleep by 3.

Wednesday at 8:30ish the phone rang. I was deep in slumber, but it was Velma and we had a great talk. I know how hard it is going to be for her to leave Jewells at home!! When she gets back to work next week I will go in and take her to lunch and find out what I can give the little cutie for a present. After my coffee fix I did 3 loads of laundry and was going to go to the store, but my nose was running. Yes, okay, very funny, but if I didn't have Kleenex in every room there would have been a trail of snot!! About 4 I figured it was an allergy but didn't want to take anything that would knock me out. Why? Well, church at 5 and a meeting at 8. Church was nice. I really like the Wednesday service. Then down to the deli for a beer and some food before the meeting. The meeting which lasted until 10:45. I came into it angry and was, thankfully, taken down a peg, told to explain, and ended up learning a good lesson. Now here I am, after playing 'Noah's Ark' and Mahjong for almost 2 hours.

What is the insight of the week so far? Keep breathing. Don't feel that I have to 'do' things in order to be a 'good' person because in doing that I am keeping others from doing what they should be doing!

So hump day is over and it is now March 1. Wow!

I am on feline duty for the next 5 days. Be prepared for whining about cat allergies. Or I could just take a pill. . . . .

Why the subject line? Today (28th that was - in the category of THEN) was Tom's 60th! I think he still looks like he did when I first met him in 1981. And many years from now, I hope he will still look good.

That was the week that was Then

Sunday the 18th. Stagger to church. And the rest of the day is a blur after the Mardi Gras party. Oh, I remember now, first I went to Tournesol with the DeLanges for a nice brunch, where I didn't see Renee, though she was supposed to be there to celebrate her birthday, then I went to Dorothy's to show her the arborists' proposals. I love Abby, she loves me. I sneeze. Abby is the cat. I got home I shed all the clothes, took a bath and a Benadryl. Dopey, but okay afterwards. Well, dopey but who cares?

Monday the 19th. Respite from $$$$. Cold very cold. Power lunch with Bryan, Melissa & FRB+ at Arunee. Subject: ESL and possible strategic alliance. Home after a tour of NICE, then a warm bath.

Tuesday the 20th. No Bernie, because can't count and get to Forest Hills. Counted, went to bank, fed Rebecca's cats who either were fed that morning, or weren't hungry from Saturday. Then off to Ray's at 6:00 for Pancake Tuesday and as always a wonderful meal and good company. At 7:45 left for Vestry meeting. Home at 10:50. ACKKKK!!!

Wednesday the 21st. Foster/Seiver c. 10:30. Cleaned up, baked pudding cake and cupcakes for T&D and Ash Wednesday service. Tom, Dinah and I worked almost all the time (Indian food break) until 5:30 when they left and I left with cake for Tea. We had a few new faces and a nice bi-lingual service. After the service I went down to Novo to hear Nathan and the Brazilian singer, but that gig won't start until March. I was starving and Rich, the co-owner, was having steak, so I stayed, listened to Latin jazz and indulged in a skirt steak. OMG was it good. Medium rare. Then home to sleep. What is it, tripsophanin or something in red meat that makes you sleepy?

Thursday the 22nd. Lazy in the morning but then I went to church to sit in the office from 2-6 while FRB+ did interviewing. After that, home for a shower and getting ready for the Novo party. First stop before the party was going to Rebecca's to feed the cats. I was surprised and shocked that they had eaten everything and drunk all the water. They were really hungry. On Tuesday it looked like they had not eaten anything since Saturday. I am puzzled. Have to admit I was upset that they were so hungry. Guilt. Major guilt. Then over to Novo. Bryan, Larisa, Enrique and Irene were there, then the others filtered in; The Wesleys, Barbara, Leslie, Kathleen, Rita, Monte, Barrie, Tim, Aimee and Georgia. We all had fun in a quiet way, then left about 11. Barbara and I walked home together and chatted. It was fun. A reunion of the Film Festival Folks. We have a formal meeting on the 5th, I think, to discuss this year.

Friday the 23rd. Well, I slept 12+ hours and never got out of bed. What's to say? I read the paper, ate, nodded off during the day and thoroughly enjoyed being a total slug.

Saturday the 24th. Okay, I will get back to this. I do know I watched 'The State Within' on BBCAmerica and 'Sell This House' on AETV. Oh yes, 3 loads of laundry and talking to friends on the phone. Multiple calls.

Sunday the 25th. I couldn't get to sleep last night. Go figure. Set 3 alarms and woke up, finally, at 7:38AM. I did make it to church on time, showered, dressed and semi-coherent. We had only 6 people. Not encouraging. Then Dorothy and I went to the supermarket where I bought a few essentials, then home fast because it was cold and we hadn't had coffee yet. I ate a Nutella and Peanut Butter sandwich with a banana and a strong cup of coffee. Stared at the TV for an hour then proceeded to organize the kitchen until 5. Then went out to forage, i.e., to Subway for a tuna salad and 7-11 for beer. Home, more organizing of the kitchen. Now all the items I removed from under the sink for the leak are back, the shelf unit is in the closet holding other supplies, the microwave is on the other counter and I arranged my corks and I have almost a 15"x20" bulletin board.

I have found a new way to keep warm. Sweat pants OVER the jeans. Sweater, sweatshirt and fleece vest, 2 pair of socks and slippers, if possible. Mmmm. toasty.

Nothing on TV to interest me, so took a long, luxurious shower, bundled up, and here I am.

Tomorrow, weather permitting - Money counting, Foster/Seiver/DeLange Power meeting, then Novo.

Will try to be more timely because I realize if I write down stuff, then I remember. OTW my brain just files what I've done under OTHER.

I want to go to Florida and am aghast at athe rates at the place I was originally wanting to stay. Will check Westwinds.

Snowing now. Maybe tomorrow, too. Good thing I have cool boots.

Mostly then, some now

Ackk! Bill the Cat phrase from the Berke Breathed cartoon strip. Why mention it? Because it is just a little better than Arghh! which I have always loved, from Charlie Brown. Non sequitur (er?)

The 15th Tom and Dinah came over and we brain stormed about the book. Aside from the fact that Dinah almost turned into a Popsicle after the fire died out (she was wearing a hat and blanket towards the end of the visit while I, knowing my apartment, had on long underwear, and three other layers. Tom was fine. Was he raised by wolves in the Arctic??? We had a breakthrough on the format. More than we had had in years. I attribute it to having another eye and brain in the mix. Possibly next week M&L will join us. I hope.

I made brownies for the visit but knowing my weakness took half of them up to J&B. Thank goodness Dinah ate the last one before she left!!

Friday was groceries and cleaning lady. What a wonderful thing it is to have someone to come in and do the heavy cleaning. I am really fortunate, and know it!!!

Saturday, today, what a treat the day was! My clean house didn't need me to scurry around doing anything, so I slept late. Then had the utter luxury of reading the Saturday Times (which comes with all the non-news parts of the Sunday Times) even the Book Review and Magazine!!

Then I went to the Mardi Gras party at church. What fun! This was a fund raiser, but also an event to see if we could get the community involved and it worked! We had a lot of families with under 6 children, parisioners, JH folks, and live music (arranged by me, thank you, thank you verr' much). Food was good, everyone seemed to have a good time and all were out by 9!

So home and I've spent the past few hours answering email from friends near and far.

I might say I am lucky to have friends who are far away, whom I haven't seen in years, who still stay in touch, but is it luck? Is it just plain love and friendship. I am thankful whatever it is.

When I feel low I realize that the mere act of waking up each morning is a true blessing. If the day begins that way, I have to pass it on some way.

House bound

Yes, woke up to the sleet pounding on the window. Dashed around tidying, doing dishes, putting things away and then working on scanning. Tom called and cancelled due to weather and the fact he'd already taken 2 falls. Tomorrow when its really cold, he will be over. Neither of us can figure out what the next step in the book process is. He feels it has to be a book before it's a website. I am sans idees.

Worked out well as I got my laundry done . Vestry meeting also cancelled. Wise.

I just ordered a book called Apartment Therapy - the 8 Step Cure to something or other. Organization, perhaps?? That along with 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and I am 15 steps from being Hell on Wheels!!! Yeah! Fear me!!!

Listed 15 CDs on lala and already have 4 that want homes. Cool, as I only want 1 so far.

Off to catch some Who.

weather forecast

Snow, ice, rain, snow. Or something like that. Weather maps show big white squiddy like things covering the east coast. Not to worry I have food and candles and firewood.

Headache finally went away. Bernie this morning but I was dopey from the meds so things were a bit odd. Before I left I wrangled my bed and box spring out of the bedroom and vacuumed the room and rug. Box spring in the hallway and mattress in the bathroom.

The carpet men came about 4 and then I went out foraging. Afterwards I washed and rinsed the bedroom floor - all shiny now, and replaced the bed. I still have to put the sheets on though. Bah.

MGD came over to get the rug underlayment (pad?) up and stored in the basement. I wonder when I am going to lay the new rug in the bedroom. Soon I think because the bed slides around on the bare floor.

Tomorrow morning, computing and then cleaning up the kitchen. Used it as a temporary storage for all the bedroom stuff. That's the trouble having the 2 rooms so close together.

I am listening to the traffic outside and the snow can't be too bad because the sounds aren't muffled.

Okay, this is boring. I'm going to bed.

Money counting, headache

Gee, that is an exciting title. The headache wasn't caused by counting money. It appeared yesterday and has been in residence since. I could bombard it with Fioricet (and did this afternoon, followed by a nap) but I don't feature being totally (read more) spacey than usual.

Allen wants to quit money counting - says he was told 'only church members can count' - FRB+ says that is nonsense, have him come speak to me. Oy, the go between. Not my favorite position at anytime.

I am seeing such a dearth of people who want to volunteer, or even extend themselves that I fear for the future of St. Mark's. Maybe this is just the headache speaking.

John Verderosa (great name for an arborist) sent in his estimate of the church work. It is more than the Bartlett one but includes some more work. Dorothy asked a valid question: Do we have the money? Well, spread across all the budgets, pre-school, building & grounds & garden club the work is feasible.

Walter called from GA where he is for his aunt's funeral. I was asleep and he didn't leave a number. Does the entire world have caller ID. *69 informed me he called from his cell.

Tom called. Book Book Book! He's coming Wednesday about 1 to see progress on putting the images and text on the computer. But I am still clueless about how to present this to the world. Just now, though, I had an idea! Website!! I will run this past Matt and Lisa. Since we know we will never be able to make money on the project and I doubt get it published, why not put it on the web? Bulletin: Matt says consult an Intellectual Property attorney. Sigh.

What else? Up early to move furniture out of the way of the LI Carpet Cleaning dudes. BMG, await the storm. Rain? Snow? Hype?

Stay tuned.

LiveJournal postings from 11/17-2/05

February 8th, 2007

Back

Off to kiddie pick up and finding I was using the wrong key hole. I knew I'd been able to do it before.

Earlier a talk with FRB+ about proactive/initiative and the sheep mentality. Upshot, I'll be buying the lock, which I was going to do but hadn't asked before.

Todo for tomorrow:
PO
HD
Arborist
Lunch?? No word from them yet.

Mouth still hurts. Going to bed.

Midday Special

Owww! Well maybe oww, the novocaine has worn off and it hurts. Okay, that is all for bodily aches.

Weather report: Up early after incredibly weird dreams and Lo! I wasn't cold!! Apartment was bearable. Half a cup of coffee before dentist, then off. Outside not so bad, either.

Dentist is such a nice person and if you have to have an injection then he is the expert.

Went to msbelle's but the door wasn't cooperating. Put note under door telling her problem then realized I would be with her when she opened it. Duh.

PB& honey sandwich on whole wheat and glass of milk. Rest of coffee.

Call from film festival buddy to go and march in the Woodside St. Patrick's day parade on March 4th. And why not??

Last night located some Clan tartan and am ordering 3 patterns (ancient, weathered and modern or Battle, Dress and Modern) so MGD can scan them. Uh huh. Long story. And it's not like they are authentic. Col. Ivan, the last G of G had them commissioned by Dalgety & Sons in Forfar in the 1950's.

Plan this afternoon is to revise my phone list and add all the bits and pieces and business cards I have to go through every time I make a call. Roladexes are SO ugly, but I see the practicality of them.

Later, maybe.

News and Weather

Greetings, it is 23:22 and time for me to complain about the cold weather. It is cold outside. It is cold inside. I found the electric heater and my extra long underwear. Temperatures must be moderating. I didn't have to wear my hat and coat this afternoon whilst doing chores.

News? Not much, actually. Frank, my real name is Francis but everyone calls me Frank, the arborist came to assess the trees. Nice guy, looks like he actually does the work himself rather than just a salesman. His report will be ready by Friday. Chick came also but her foot is hurting (sprain?) and limped along. Afterwards we went to Variety Bakery for some hot coffee and I had to go to get her paper across Northern as she was in too much pain. She went home and so did I. She went to bed but I did laundry until I ran out of quarters.

Willa feeling very under the weather so no trip in town after the dentist tomorrow. I am planning to help Msbelle get things from the post office and maybe some other things.

My humidifier is burbling away. Not quite white sound, or a soothing fountain, but it does have a hypnotic effect.

I have come to the conclusion I have too many clothes but am not sure how one goes about purging. Do you dump all of them on the bed and go Yes No? I have them stashed in the basement, 2 closets, a trunk and some drawers. Guess that is an Internet search for guidelines.

Okay, off to sleep and try not to think about dentist.

February 6th, 2007

tuesday, formerly shopping with Jim now mornings with Bernie

Jim Van Maanen is due to have surgery on his foot, so no driving for a while. Meanwhile I will see BMG on Tues morning. Made it today, even walked to subway. Still cold in the apartment, but not as cold outside. Went to Narita afterwards for sushi, then home via supermarket.

When I got home I just left my coat and hat on for about 3-4 hours. More comfortable that way. Got an email from the house president re: heat, etc. told him I am freezing but not complaining (to him!) because 1. if they turn up the heat everyone else will roast 2. I am trying to shrink my carbon footprint and 3. I enjoy suffering in silence. Okay, enough of the sarcasm.

All the arborists are set up. Tomorrow Frank. Friday John. Should I bring a camera? I did last time and didn't use it.

Matt wants me to take pictures of the Tartan so PB can scan it with Pantone software (I think) and we can reproduce it on computer.

My head feels better than it did Sunday and Monday. Too much feeling boxed in. I realize saying no is not forbidden. Now if I can act on this. "I'm sorry you are upset about ___________ but the person you should be speaking to about it is_______________" I will work on memorizing that.

Not a very exciting day but I did get out of the house and move around!

February 5th, 2007

Oh hello again

Never made it to Curves. Called Jean at 9:30 and said too cold, too little sleep. She agreed and we chatted for a while.

Did make it out of bed for coffee, then back to be warm. You could see your breath in the kitchen so I basically sat around feeling cold and sorry for myself and talking on the phone when I should have been doing something physical to get the blood stirring.

Well I did install the correct printer software and get that working.

Watched more Doctor Who and then showered (more for warmth than dirtyness) and went to Novo to rendezvous with Renee and the kids and Maia and Sascha from the jh list. Jim agreed to do the St. Mark's gig, the salmon special was good if too many capers, the kids enjoyed the music and we were all home by nine.

No doubt about it. Computing makes you cold. So, I am going to stop typing, turn on the humidifier and go read under the covers.

I have an appointment with another arborist on Friday. This is the second one who was stuck in Mexico and couldn't make last Saturday. Number three hasn't called to set up a time.

Florida seems very appetizing right now.

Weekend

Saturday - waited and waited for the arborist to come over to church. No dice. Picked litter and chatted to those present. The rest of the day is a blur. Nightmares Friday and Saturday concerning bishop's visit. Parking, litter, service glitches, sweaty shirts upon waking. Printer problems - scanner not recognized. Big problem for Tom's visit. Nothing to show. Call and bite bullet. Email to M, no answer.

Sunday morning up early to go pick up litter before the service. One bag. Home, phone calls, then late to shower, change and just made it to church. No Chick. I duck out during opening hymn to call her. She is okay but new meds making her tired and spacy. Back to church. Service lots of smells and bells. Coffee hour filled with food and good cheer. Vestry meets with bishop - couldn't hear much though. Then down stairs to count plate with Allen. Isabelle came to collect stuff.

I leave and church is completely empty. Freeze going home and arrive about 2. Call Tom, we reschedule. Call Matt, no help, he is having computer problems, too. Still cold. Fleece, hat, quilt, and a nap. Wake up and order Thai. Oh yes, order Thai, eat, then sleep. Miss Super Bowl. Watch 'Sally Lockhart' on PBS because I read the book and it stars Billie Piper. Sort of good. I didn't like Sally in the book and BP makes the character more sympathetic but story was true to book. Still an odd one. I should read reviews.

Then watch 5 episodes of Doctor Who, also starring Billie Piper. So here it is 3:17 and I am still awake. Posted some testy comments on families group, basically telling them to hit DEL instead of riding their high horses.

Tomorrow Curves with Jean, another arborist will make an appt and yet a third will make one for Tuesday.

I am tired of being responsible, tired of being cold and having to run the humidifier all the time. Tired tired tired.

Everything old is new again

A friday without Bernie. Odd. I've switched to Tuesday mornings now, or for now. We'll see how that works out. Awoke to Jean foaming at the latest from the PUPPYS. Very funny actually. Then cleaning up for Martha, the cleaning lady. She came and i went out.

Haircut and a trip to the drug store and library. No copies of 7 Habits so I ended up ordering it from Amazon.
Haircut was fine, drugstore had tissues on sale. Yay!

7:30 off to Garden School for a wine and cheese party which turned out to be a big deal party. Very well attended and a silent auction. Although I only had $10 (Jean's explanation was sort of fuzzy) for the entrance fee it didn't stop me from bidding on a terrific pencil sketch of one of the Towers Griffins. I also collected 13 corks for my project, along with a lot of saturated fats. You should have seen me eating the cauliflower and veggies when I finally found them. Don Berhang was there and we had a great chat. I felt like I'd never left. (that is what I meant by everything old is new again. but maybe it should be everything old is still there)

We lined up a few more folks to go to Novo. Most likely on the 12th.

Renee and I are going down to Novo early on Monday to speak with Jim about the Mardi Gras party.

What else. Uh, another arborist will be coming Tuesday. Allen and I are meeting Sunday instead of Monday. It is raining instead of snowing but promises to get cold.

Tomorrow tramping with the second arborist. And if energetic, picking up papers, moving cones.

What's up

Me, early, to meet Ed the Arborist. Dressed warmly and went over to church grounds to tramp around with Ed. He wasn't as discouraging as I thought. And will be sending a fax with an estimate. Saturday we have John the arborist coming. I got chilled and had a hard time warming up afterwards.

Dental appointment - cleaning and x-rays. Found a chipped tooth where a filling is being undermined, so back again next week.

Groceries, church tea and service. Home for the BBC news then back for XCom and home about 9:50.

Tomorrow laundry. Blew off today.

Doctor R called. Blood tests fine and chlosterol (whatever) is down. But he couldn't convince Doctor B to take me off one of the meds. A battle of at least 4 years...

Missed J's email about going to Atlas Park. Rats!

Not the most interesting posting, just part of daily life.

I mailed back my Cunard documents and the insurance claim. Hope I did it correctly as there is significant money to be gotten back.

I need to get a book from Matt or the library: Seven something - Habits of Highly something. Walter is going to guide me through the book. Should be fun.

At tea we were talking about good Thai restaurants in the area. If I can find the phone numbers I might call Doris or one of the others to go out some day. Or not. . .

Must go read today's paper before it is yesterdays.

A woman walks into a bar..

Only kidding, but I did go to Novo tonight for jazz and did get walked home by a gentleman. After he invited me up to his apartment to look at the rug on his floor. Sounds fishy, huh? No, he is putting the apartment on the market and was wondering if the rug would be a plus or minus in the sale. A minus as he has beautiful hardwood floors. And, stunning stained glass transoms. If you know anyone who would like a one bedroom with a HUGE eat in kitchen on the second floor of the Greystones, I can send you the info. He is selling to move downstairs, that's all.

Yes, in the interests of St Marks Mardi Gras party I went to Novo to ask Jim Hershman if he would be able to get together some live music for the party at a reasonable price. Yes. Yay! And the jazz was great tonight. A tenor sax player sat in for a few songs and also a Latin singer. Both women! Lots of people in and out and good vibes I thought.

Today I had the eye doctor. Glaucoma pressure rather elevated so he did a really thorough check up that had me looking like Bambi and wearing dark glasses and cursing the sun. Seems I have been doing the drops to rapidly and need to rest a few minutes to let them sink in. Three months.

Also saw the oncologist. Nothing much new there except he and the cardiologist are going to have a dialogue to lower my Coreg (cardiomyopathy drug) and keep on with the Femara because I had 11 cancerous nodes and some studies have shown that one can take it up to 10 years for protection. Common wisdom is post-chemo therapy (herceptin, tamoxifin, Femara) is only effective for 5 years. I don't mind it. My body is used to it now. In the beginning it made me tired.

I didn't get home until 3:45 then spent time on the phone until I went to Novo.

That's the report for today. Tomorrow Isabelle and the money. Laundry. Don't know what.

Saturday

I was hot to post last night, then overcome with tiredness and showered, then to bed. Having the laptop out of the bedroom is actually a good idea because I would never leave there otherwise. Except to eat and use the bathroom.

What was I going to say last night? Saw Renee in the morning, later baked chocolate chip cookies so TEF wouldn't go hungry when he came. Sure enough, Coke and CCC. I am custodian of the month of February and am going to try to scan it and import into some kind of presentation. He made me swear a blood oath that I wouldn't lose it. Unless the living room ceiling falls in, it will be safe as it is still resting on the couch. I move slowly sometimes.

We decamped to Indian Taj for some good food (I do want to try Kebab King soon, though), then he went to the Met - museum, not supermarket - and I went to Bernie.

I am dodging a headache, but have no meds left so Bufferin it is.

Woke up today to Msbelle's call. She and mac were free for lunch. Yay! I wore the same sweater I had on in my picture and we met at Jahn's. Fun and he is adorable. The most beautiful hands I've ever seen! I would be kissing those little fingers all day!!

The rest of the day, not very productive, though I went to Ultima and bought myself a big bouquet of yellow flowers. Very cheerful in the front hall.

Sunday is church and nothing much after that. I will have to tell Isabelle that $$$ will move to Tuesday as I've got Dr. Chu and Dr. Ratner on Monday.

I've been thinking about my carbon footprint. Al Gore's influence no doubt. Let's see: cfr in all but 2 fixtures, electric kettle v. stove, energy saver appliances, no car and use mass transit, switched to wind power on my Con Ed energy supplier choice - what more can I do? I did read an article that polyester is better than cotton because it takes less energy to produce, but if I don't buy any clothes for a long while, then is that better? Not like I need any!

I looked around on the net for home energy audits but didn't find anything useful. I think this is just a fleeting paranoia brought on by using my humidifier so much when it is cold. Hot air rather than cold. It sterilizes the steam.

My new checks came and there aren't enough Kermit checks! Luckily I like all the Muppets so using Gonzo won't be a hardship, and I think I will save the Animal checks for certain people or institutions. After about 6 years of Mary Engelbright (sp), these are a nice change.

Won 2 bronze push plates on eBay. They will look nice on the swinging door, and are the same price as 1 from the www.houseofantiquehardware.com website. They are from 1901. Neat.

That's it for now.

The days

1/25/2007

Thursday already, Burns Night when the Scots eat Haggis, drink whisky and read Robbie Burns poetry. I did laundry.

Before the laundry, in the morning, I went over to Garden to hear Ruth Messinger speak about the Darfur Project. A senior, maybe when he was a junior, got interested in the horrors over there and mobilized the school to have lessons in the situation, fund raisers (blue jean Fridays) and bring Ms Messinger and an Oberlin student who is with a student organization, STAND, to speak.

I've learned a lot by being in the UK where the news covers the fighting and killing more than the US news does. Finding there is an organization, and people here that care was good. Also that I could find someplace to send money. I'm not of the age to go to Africa and be in a war zone.

After laundry, visit to the church to read binders. No smoking guns, but some missing minutes, and the checking account information from one of the accounts.

FRB+ not getting the support he feels he should have. Pledge numbers don't look dire but I will have to review the budget again to see how much of a shortfall we have.

WRM to resign in May. I am next penguin on the edge of the ice floe. Why did I think he would wait until next May?

Wednesday was tea and making doctor appointments. Chu and Ratner same day, Cordero the week after. Blaufarb says things aren't so bad that if I don't eat Pizza, Chinese, Fried foods and watch my habits and we check again in three months that maybe the blood work will be okay and no more drugs. I'm motivated.

Tuesday Christmas card from Susan in Alaska. Vern died in August and Velma is living in Concord. I am sorry but he made it to 91 and that's not bad. She and her family are doing well. I am working up courage to write.

Well, laundry on the bed and mess in the kitchen so maybe I should sign off and go remedy this so I can go to bed.

Tomorrow TEF in the morning, then maybe Indian, then Bernie.

Saturday is open I think.

Social whirl

Saturday the meeting, dinner with Mauricio. We went to the Afghan House and had a really nice time. Later a call from Walter followed by visit from W. Nice fire in fireplace. It was an accident really. I was burning junk mail and the logs I thought would need a lot of kindling didn't.

Sunday church, brunch with the DLs in DUMBO, party at the MMoran house for showing of 'Cash in the Attic'.

Monday counting money, making friends unexpectedly with two small children from the ELC, Michayla and her brother Hayden. M is not too outgoing I heard, but we had a great little bonding experience and Hayden and I built a car out of colored plastic building things - not Lego. When I left they got hugs and kisses and so did I.

I have things to do - taxes, organizing other stuff, but blew it off and read the paper. Hah!

Finished my Icelandic mysteries and am on a break from that genre by reading some poetry.

Cold weather is here. My hibernating instincts are calling again. BUT Curves called and said, so?? like when are you coming back???????? so I said Wednesday. Stay tuned for the results on THAT one.

New Highlander movie out next month. I watched the trailer and it is totally incomprehensible. Totally. Is this 'high concept'? I will most likely go see it with Harry. Matt says we have to bond more.

Shopping tomorrow. Church Wednesday. Thursday? Friday Bernie. Organizing sometime. Laundry also sometime. Haircut, too.

Catching up on the news - STM meeting in PM

Finally had a chance to read the paper, but not all. After I sign off, the Style and Arts or whatever is left.
Worked on addresses for the church directory, cleaned up, took laundry down and found out 41 was doing theirs. That's okay. I wasn't much interested. Wanted to get it out of the apt. Tomorrow or Saturday. Not like i'm going to run out.

Hmmm. Maybe that is a signal that I should sort and purge the clothes. Yes, definitely.

Meeting was about Space. Not yet the Final Frontier, but the regular 'renters' of StM.It was very interesting and most likely the first time a meeting has been held.

Had a chance to ask DS if she could help me and FRB+ with locating the Cert. of Inc. of the church. Nothing is easy, of course, and it is probably in the safe deposit box, located someplace in Queens and signatories are????
You know, some things I can find out and somethings not. I DS is definitely on board with this search which so far has taken me about 10 hours of computer searching and $60.00 in personal expenses.

L&M & I will go to brunch in DUMBO on Sunday. I wanted to take them out in addition to giving them gifts.

I feel really down right now. Maybe the weather or I don't know what? Mauricio finishing? All the niggling things I have to do before I can focus on some important things like doctors and check ups and taxes. And the always present desire to get away somewhere where life is either simpler, or I don't feel like I'm always behind. I don't mean move or anything. That idea has been shelved. But constantly as if I have forgotten something important that I was supposed to do.

I told my friends Rachel and Velma - two women who have 1. had surgery, and 2. a baby recently to think of soft clean sand, an umbrella, the sound of surf, a cool drink and to relax. Most likely I was telling them what I wanted! Or want. Or will have. Timing, that is the problem.

Torn between wanting to be 'Action Woman' and a bear who sleeps all the time. Last night I was exhausted and had a headache. But the trouble with going to sleep early for me is that I wake 2 or 3 times in the night! I used my iPod last night while reading and when I finally surfaced enough to open my eyes I saw that 44 of the total number of my stored music had been played while I slept. Nice. And it took me about 45 seconds to take off the headphones and get back to sleep.

The clock says 9:53 and I don't know if I want more to eat or to go to sleep. If I wait or play a computer game it will be sleep.

The Beatles - 4th Quarter Estimated Tax

I just filed the final 2006 taxes. Used on-line filer and my Amex card. Now all I have to do is organize my files and wait for the 1099s to come in.

I am exhausted. The past few days have been meetings and dealing with various issues, over-sleeping, and general anxiety. My jaw hurts which might mean I've been clenching my teeth in my sleep again. Have to call the dentist.

If all goes well, Mauricio will be finished with the projects by Wednesday night. Tomorrow morning I have an 8:30 meeting, Thursday a 6:00 (I think, have to look that up again). Friday Bernie, Saturday 10-1 at church, Sunday 8:00 at church. Monday 9:00 money counting.

Sermon Sunday was about having Big Dreams. I really never thought about that before. Somehow I've never given myself permission to have dreams, big or little. I think i've thought to have these was hubris and the big Monty Python foot would splat me. I'm going to think about this idea. Stay tuned.

The temperature has finally dropped and it is below freezing cold now. Forgot to check how long this will last. I don't mind, now that I've unpacked my long underwear.

On a positive note. My chicken soup improved with sitting overnight and a shot of hot sauce. Very yummy last night. And Sunday's trip to Trader Joe's allowed me to restock the haricot vert supply and chicken sausages. Also unsulfured apricots. Better than chocolate they are!

My tile surprise is a manhole cover at the bottom of my stairs. When you open the front door, there is a manhole. I've wanted this for years and years. First saw the tile at HD Expo and showed them to Mauricio online and we both agreed it was doable and funny. Now it is done and still funny! Website is www.imaginetile.com

Okay, off to get some organization done. Laundry to basement is a start.

Don't get swallowed up

Easier to say than do.
Keeping up with church matters could be a 40 hour week job. Dealing with bumps in the road (sudden illnesses of staff), chicanery, persons with attitudes and physical work. Triage?

Yesterday and day before working creating lists, charts, action plans for pledge drive. Long and fairly dramatic meeting last night.

Today I stayed in and caught up on the paper, finished my chicken soup and began to tackle the Summer Palace. Progress in that I brought one bookcase back to other bedroom, moved and filled the tall one (my cigar box fetish is noticable now that they aren't all over the floor). I can see part of the desk but there are piles of papers that I was organizing before I lost the thread. Now i don't remember what they are.

Chicken soup. Lots of work and not so great. I don't know what is missing and there is a lot of it. I'm trying to be low fat and salt and the colesterol (whatever) and really, I'd like a big, rare burger with fries.

Mauricio and Walter put in the tile on Saturday, then M came back and put the edging around it on Monday, I think. Lost track. He still has to grout it, finish the plaster work in the bedroom, caulk and touch up the bookcases then he is finished. I truly appreciate the work but it is difficult to have someone around at night, esp. he can only come certain days.

Have to figure out how to hang the light in SP because the naked bulb on the wire thing is getting really old.

Carpet has to be rolled up and stored, floor washed well, then the carpet tiles to be installed.

I keep saying 'Key West' but there is no time! Meetings here, things there, feeling pressured all the time. Arghhh.

Tired

Tired. The holidays seemed to take forever to get here, then seemed to be one continuous stream until last night. Yesterday P&A had New Years Dinner which was FAB!! Talk about groaning table. Well, actually the table DID seem weighted down, but we all kept saying Ohh, I can't eat another thing! Then did. Mmmm. Goose. Mmmm butterscotch pudding. Mmmm, sleep!

Today it was up and over to church to count money. Not too painful. We will be switching to Mondays in the future so I can still go grocery shopping wih Jim.

More work on the apartment tonight. Beginning of the surprise project. Mauricio and I know what it is but I haven't told anyone else. It's an idea I've had for years, ever since I saw the product. So glad I found someone who thinks like I do!

Did I write about New Years Eve? After church Matt and I went to Home Depot, but didn't buy anything. Ate, then came home. I remember reading 2 sections of the paper, then nothing until the phone rang about 6:45. Jim! I was supposed to be there at 6:30. Went up, then went across to Beverley. Still stupifingly tired but lasted to midnight. Came home and slept until 11 the next morning.

Am I a candidate for hibernation experiments, OR WHAT!!

December 30th, 2006

Not a resolution was stirring, not even a 'might'

A resolution would mean commitment! Arghh.

Global warming in Queens means the temp today was in the high 40s and D and I raked 8 bags of leaves in the church yard and planted about 25+ bulbs that we found in a flowerpot. They were under leaves, forgotten about, because we had dug them up by mistake. Nature took care of our tardiness and sent out 2 inch stalks and roots, so as the sun set, we were dibbling and digging. At least we've preserved them from being lost.

Global warming also means you have to watch your step in the garden to not trample all the other bulbs that are popping up!

The carpenter came back to do some plaster work and to oil the butcherblock shelf. The floating shelf sits at the same height as the other counters in the room and once the bracket is finish plastered and painted, you won't be able to tell how it got there. He also hid the wires in the wall. All in all, a wonderful job. Of course it makes it very hard not to leave the bedroom. A TV, telephone, laptop, iPod, well, why would you get out of bed. No wonder I call it the Executive Suite.

Still not 100% after the flu but got my blood work form from the doctor and the numbers aren't as bad as I feared. Cancer markers very low. YAY!

I answered a posting on the JHfamilies site for someone to come take away the 50" candle sticks. Reason being small child learning to crawl. The family lives in the building opposite my front window. Not a long walk at all. It is fun to meet the new generation of neighbors. I find that the work with the Film Festival folk lets me meet them, too.

Had a peek at the church floor. Fabulous refinishing job. Thank heavens. It might not save the church but it does look like someone cares. I was talking to Father Brown about how so many of us there focus on little things like weeds and bulbs because we are scared to face the loss of the church. The enormity of what we all have to do to solve some thorny issues and build, rebuild, the parish is so daunting. Without a leader before, none of us knew what to do. FRB+ does have his work cut out for him.

Christmas was nice. Morans, family, Morans, exhaustion.

November 17th, 2006

inside my head - outside in the world

Yes, lots of stuff in my head and things in the outside world have been keeping me silent. Spiritual, Secular, Family, and a big helping of Ennui.

Right now I'm not very happy with things around me - but know I can't solve them. Some small wisdom here?

When this happens, I think KEY WEST! Oh yes, Run Away!

Things I do like: my MacBook, the weird warm windy weather, cleanish house and cleaned up store room, new dining room fixture, overhead light (finally!) in master bedroom, aka, Summer Palace.

So that's it for now. I really should be here every day because sometimes days go by and I can't remember what I did.
